VOLUNTEER SHOWCASE
Lorene Coblentz & Ruby Schrock
When you ask sisters Lorene (left) and Ruby (right) what made them start volunteering with what was then The Thrift House over 40 years ago, their thoughts go back to their mother, who was always doing things to support MCC. They remember her making dresses for the Christmas bundles, and then bags for the school kits and assembling them with others. They have always had a strong respect for and desire to support MCC, and found a way to do that through what is now our Hartville Thrift Shoppe.
They continue after all these years because “the need never changed, and the mission remains worthwhile.” Lorene and Ruby have both volunteered mostly in the book department, but they have also worked as managers of the store at different times over the years. Lorene has also served on the board.
They also cite several additional reasons that they continue and that they would encourage others to consider volunteering here as well: the friendships and camaraderie of the volunteers and staff, the meaningful mission, and the fact that it “gets us out of the house.” Lorene shared that while she might like to spend the day at home, she knows that it is helpful to have something that motivates her to go and do something for others. Both she and Ruby shared the joy of giving back and doing something they know will help so many in need around the world.
Between the two of them, they have served nearly 80 years, and they bring joy to all of us at the shop through their service.
